Now, let’s see in detail about this AOC region here…

Brief History of Pessac-Léognan AOC

This prestigious AOC of today was a part of the appellation called Graves in the past.

The Graves appellation was the one which was dominating the wine production in Bordeaux during those days.

We could learn that both the red, as well as the white wines that were produced in Graves had a great global reputation in the past for their flavours, minerals, structure, and heaviness.

As this appellation was oversized when compared to others, this was split into two sub-appellations. They are namely Graves AOC and Pessac-Léognan AOC.

Of these, the Pessac-Léognan AOC includes almost all the superior quality châteaux of Graves. Fortunately, all these châteaux were located in the western villages of the larger Graves and these constitute the Pessac-Léognan now.

Geography, Climate, and Viticulture in Pessac-Léognan

In total, the region is found to be having almost 1580 hectares under vine cultivation and similar to all the other appellation of Bordeaux, this AOC is also having a unique terroir.

We can see that this AOC region is hotter than other appellations.

Here, the vineyards are planted on the sloping hillsides at the elevations of 3 to 27 meters above the sea level.

In general, the red wine grapes are being planted in the terroir with larger deposits of gravels, quartz, and pebbles, whereas, the white wine grapes are being planted in the terroir with clay and limestone contents.

When it comes to climatic conditions, we can observe that the region is sharing the similarities with another AOC called Médoc.

Each of the ten communes within the Pessac-Léognan is found to be experiencing varying temperatures, thereby creating the variations in the ripeness, alcohol levels, and harvesting dates.
