Visit Dijon for a Wine Tour

Are you planning for a wine tour? I would say you must first read about Dijon, which is a city in the eastern part of France. Dijon and wine tour – what’s the connection?

This place has a close association with wines because it’s rightly placed in the heart of the world’s favourite wine region, Burgundy.

This city, which is the capital of the Côte-d’Or department, is found to be surrounded by some prestigious vineyards and therefore, it could offer you with a wide variety of wines from several appellations.

Several vineyards are within twenty minutes from Dijon. The wine route from Dijon goes to several of the world-famous wines.

Dijon is the Gateway of Route des Grands Crus

The Route des Grands Crus, which can be otherwise called as Road of the Great Wines, is home to the eight top 10 most expensive wineries of the world.

This 60-kilometer route is found to be running along the foot of the Côte d’Or department from Dijon to Santenay in a north-south direction.

Thus, this route is covering several great appellations of the Burgundy and hence, it has got the name.

If you are planning to take a wine tour, I would suggest you start from Dijon which would take you through the following great vineyards:

Marsannay-la-Côte

This is a commune in the Côte-d’Or and is situated six kilometres South-West of Dijon.
Here, the vineyards are found to be planted on the slopes of Côte-d’Or and are forming a part of the famous Côte de Nuits.

This region produces wines of all the three colours with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as the major grape varieties. The commune’s appellation is called Marsannay.

Côte de Nuits

This is a wine region that is located in the northern part of Côte-d’Or and is found to be extending from Dijon to the south of Nuits-Saint-Georges.

This region is covering a total of 14 communes and is more popular for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir. However, some white and rosé wines are also produced here.

The Route des Grands Crus would cover the following villages of the Côte de Nuits region:

  • Fixin
  • Gevrey-Chambertin
  • Morey-Saint-Denis
  • Chambolle-Musigny
  • Vougeot
  • Flagey-Echézeaux
  • Vosne-Romanée
  • Nuits-Saint-Georges

Côte de Nuits Villages

The wines that are being produced in the Côte de Nuits could fall under many AOC appellations which depending upon the location where the grapes are cultivated and the grapes that are blended.

In general, all the wines produced in this region would fall under the title of AOC Bourgogne.
In addition, there is a higher quality AOC called Côte de Nuits Villages which is a general appellation for the wines that are being produced in the following five communes:

  • Fixin
  • Brochon
  • Comblanchien
  • Corgoloin
  • Prissey

The next step is the individual village appellations which are followed by the Premier Crus. There are no Grand Crus here.

Côte de Beaune

This is the wine region that is located in the southern part of Côte d’Or and is found to be running between the Nuits-Saint-Georges and Beaune till River Dheune.

The Route des Grands Crus covers the following areas of the Côte de Beaune:

  • Aloxe-Corton
  • Savigny-Lès-Beaune
  • Beaune
  • Pommard
  • Volnay
  • Meursault

Summary of the appellations

The general appellation of the region is called Côte de Beaune Villages and is lying above the basic AOC Bourgogne.

Other appellations within the region include Côte de Beaune and Hautes-Côtes de Beaune.

The next step is the separate village appellations which are followed by the Premier Crus.

Finally, the Cortons in the Aloxe-Corto commune are the only Grand Crus of the region.
