Wines from Shida Kartli
Visit Shida Kartli to Taste some Excellent Wines
Shida Kartli, which is lying in the central part of Georgia, is a famous wine tour destination. This region is the geographical centre of Georgia and a major agricultural and industrial centre of the country.
People from various parts of the world arrive at Shida Kartli to enjoy the sight of its hidden valleys and cultural treasures.
Although this region is not very famous for winemaking, the wine fest that was celebrated here is a world hit.
Yes, I agree that there is nothing much about wine grapes and wines here, but it’s worth knowing about this region’s wine fest and other things. So, let’s continue reading…
Location and Districts of Shida Kartli
This region occupies the central part of Georgia with Likhi range, Trialeti range, Great Caucasus range, and river Aragvi as its borders on western, southern, northern, and eastern sides respectively.
As such, Shida Kartli has the following districts within these borders.
Most people might be aware of Gori – the administrative centre and the self-governing city because it is the birthplace of Stalin.
If you arrive at Gori, apart from wine tasting, you can also enjoy visiting the Stalin museum too.
Shida Kartli Wine Fest
The Shida Kartli wine fest took place in the year 2013 on June 23rd. It was conducted in the Tsikhisubani district of the self-governing Gori.
This fest was organized by none other than the Georgian Wine Federation and was hosted by the governor of Shida Kartli, Zurab Chkheidze.
The idea, as well as the inspiration of the wines of Georgia and the wine associations of the nation, came from the former governor of Shida Kartli, Andro Barnovi, who later became the Head of the Administration of the Georgian President.
The primary purpose of this wine fest was to promote the region’s wines, which are well-known for its excellent taste and quality.
Not only this, the wine fest was also to promote preservation and diversification of the vine varietals of the Shida Kartli region.
Apart from these primary purposes, the fest also aimed at introducing and promoting the wines made from rare and distinctive grape varieties.
The event organizers created a catalog of traditional winemakers of Shida Kartli. During this fest, the winemakers of Shida Kartli were provided with the consultation and services on winemaking.
This event also succeeded in inspiring new winemakers. It also attracted some significant wine markets both domestically and internationally.
Finally, this wine fest provided the opportunity for the winemakers to present the wines of Shida Kartli that were never seen in the markets before.
The people from across the globe who got the opportunity to take part in this wine fest stated that the region has some excellent European style wines and that the fest was worth visiting.
Most people liked the high-quality sparkling wines of Shida Kartli. The notable white wines included the wines of Chinuri and Goruli Mtsvane.
On the other hand, the notable red side included those that made from Tavkveri, Shavkapito, and Saperavi.
Wines of Shida Kartli – Projection
As you may see, Kakheti is the most important winemaking region in Georgia.
The Shida Kartli region, on the other hand, is less popular as a winemaking region when compared to Kakheti. However, the region is found to have some excellent local native grape varieties and wines.
It’s due to this reason that the tourists to Georgia are combining the wine tour to Shida Kartli more often.
At present, the region has two wine cellars and a wine factory. These numbers will hopefully increase soon with the entry of new winemakers and markets into the region.
We can expect this region would grow as a famous wine region of Georgia very soon!
