Torontel grapes

by | Mar 12, 2017

Torontel is considered as a famous variety of white wine grape that hails from the regions of Argentina.

Torontel

In fact, the regions of Argentina entertain three different varieties of Torontel namely, Torrontes Riojano, Torrontes Sanjuanino as well as Torrontes Mendocino.

The wines produced out of all the three varieties of Torentel grapes are considered to be the most flavorsome and tasteful white wines.

To be more specific, it is the Torrontes Riojano that produces the most flavorsome wines for the wine lovers.

All the three grapes under this white wine grape variety, though are considered to be very similar in nature, yet they entertain some slight differences on their part.

The Torrontes Riojano as well as Torrontes Sanjuanino entertain large bunches of pale grapes that are very loose in terms of their arrangement, on the contrary the third variety entertains tighter bunches of grapes that are dark yellow in terms of their appearance.

All these three white wine grape varieties belong to the group of Criollas variety that is nothing but a term used for the American-incepted cultivars of the European grapevine called Vitisvinifera.

The main region where the plantation and cultivation of this white wine grape variety is carried out at large is Argentina.

The whole country of Argentina covers around 8,700 hectares of area that is planted with this white wine grape variety.

The Salta region of Argentina is the most popular area where the plantation of this white wine grape variety is carried out at large.

This white wine grape variety is also known under a number of synonyms such as Moscatel de Austria as well as Torrontes.

Origin

According to the recent researches and studies, this white wine grape variety has been originated in Argentina.

However, a number of different studies contradict this fact and they entertain different theories telling about the origin of this white wine grape variety.

According to some expert, this variety hails from the region of South America while others say that this white wine grape variety has been originated in the regions of Spain.

It was then believed that this white wine grape variety was originated in the region of Galicia in Spain and after that it was migrated to Argentina by the workers of Galicia.

At the same time, the recent study denies this fact and claims that both the varieties of Torentel of Galicia and Argentina are individual grape varieties and they do not have any similarity or connection with each other.

Characteristics

The berries of this white wine grape variety entertain a thick skin. The vines of this white wine grape variety entertain a tendency to ripen very early.

These vines are also believed to be susceptible to mildew and other infections. This is the reason why this white wine grape variety is mostly planted in the region that is dry as well as continental.

The wines produced out of this white wine grape variety are considered to be very crispy and tasty in nature.

These wines are considered to be very aromatic wines and out of all the three varieties of this white wine grape, Riojano is considered to be the most expressive and aromatic grape variety.

All the grape varieties together produce some of the fresh as well as crispy wines without the process of oak maturation. These wines are best consumed within one or two years of its release.

Food pairing

All the wines produced out of this white wine grape variety are paired at the best with the food items such as Thai green curry, goat’s cheese spread on walnut bread, honey bread as well as white sauce pasta.
