by | Mar 15, 2017

Tourbat, also known as Torbato in France is considered as a famous Mediterranean variety of white wine grape which is exclusively found and grown across the regions of northwest Sardinia.

Tourbat

This grape variety is considered to be a pure Mediterranean variety of white wine grape which is an exclusive variety of Sardinia.

The other wine estates of Sella and Mosca have come up with the most exclusive and the sparkling versions of this white wine grape variety, however they are produced once in a blue moon.

This white wine grape variety was once very much grown in the regions of Roussillon along with all the other parts of the coastal section loca7ted right towards the northern area of the Mediterranean region.

However, because of the low yields of this white wine grape variety and its high maintenance, this grape variety was soon replaced with all other kinds of white wine grape varieties that were more popular.

The grapes produced out of this white wine grape variety are very heavy as to their clusters and when they are completely ripened they cause their stern to bend because of the heavy weight of the clusters.

Thus, it results in the natural fall of the grapes from their respective vines. This grape variety was once considered to be a very widespread grape variety in the regions of France.

However, the production and cultivation of it came to a sudden halt. Fortunately, all the local winegrowers are trying to revive this white wine grape variety in its native place.

Today, the plantation and cultivation of this white wine grape variety is grown around the regions of Alghero in the province of Sassari located on the northwestern reaches of this island.

Also, in the region of France this white wine grape variety is mostly seeded in the Appellation d’Origine Contolee AOC region of Cotes du Roussillon where this grape variety is most popularly called as Malvoisie du Roussillon.

This white wine grape variety is also known under a number of synonyms such as Tourbat, Malvoisie du Roussillon and many others.
