Tourbat grapes
Tourbat, also known as Torbato in France is considered as a famous Mediterranean variety of white wine grape which is exclusively found and grown across the regions of northwest Sardinia.

This grape variety is considered to be a pure Mediterranean variety of white wine grape which is an exclusive variety of Sardinia.
The other wine estates of Sella and Mosca have come up with the most exclusive and the sparkling versions of this white wine grape variety, however they are produced once in a blue moon.
This white wine grape variety was once very much grown in the regions of Roussillon along with all the other parts of the coastal section loca7ted right towards the northern area of the Mediterranean region.
However, because of the low yields of this white wine grape variety and its high maintenance, this grape variety was soon replaced with all other kinds of white wine grape varieties that were more popular.
The grapes produced out of this white wine grape variety are very heavy as to their clusters and when they are completely ripened they cause their stern to bend because of the heavy weight of the clusters.
Thus, it results in the natural fall of the grapes from their respective vines. This grape variety was once considered to be a very widespread grape variety in the regions of France.

However, the production and cultivation of it came to a sudden halt. Fortunately, all the local winegrowers are trying to revive this white wine grape variety in its native place.
Today, the plantation and cultivation of this white wine grape variety is grown around the regions of Alghero in the province of Sassari located on the northwestern reaches of this island.
Also, in the region of France this white wine grape variety is mostly seeded in the Appellation d’Origine Contolee AOC region of Cotes du Roussillon where this grape variety is most popularly called as Malvoisie du Roussillon.
This white wine grape variety is also known under a number of synonyms such as Tourbat, Malvoisie du Roussillon and many others.
History
The most specific origins of this white wine grape variety are not known. According to some of the ampelographers, this white wine grape variety entertains a similar origin as Grenache and is known to be a Spanish grape variety.
The presence of this white wine grape variety in Roussillon seems to find that this grape variety was very much widespread under the Kingdom of Majorca with James I of Aragon.
According to some of the researches, this white wine grape variety has been originated from the regions of Spain. However, no particular evidence as to the origin of this white wine grape variety has been traced as of now.
The plantings of this white wine grape variety have declined majorly in the 20th century and today Sardinia is still one of the regions that carries out the plantation and cultivation of this white wine grape variety.

This grape variety was once on the verge of extinction. However, Sella and Mosca started off with the propagation of the cuttings of this white wine grape variety. Today, the plantings of this grape variety are seen in minority.
Characteristics
The color of the wines produced out of this white wine grape variety is a straw color that also comes with an ideal structure.
The wines produced out of it are very crisp and dry and they also come with small portions of mutation inside their barrel.
This factor helps to add richness in the wines produced out of this grape variety. These wines are flinty and come along with mineral flavors that serve as a treat to the taste buds of a person.
Also the wines produced out of this white wine grape variety are a little smoky as to their flavor that makes them all the more desirable among the hardcore wine lovers.
The overall flavor produced out of the wines of this grape variety is rich and smoky. These wines taste their best when served chilled.
