Verdiso is referred to a white wine grape variety of Italy that finds its major origins in the province of Treviso in the Veneto wine region of the northeast Italy.

This white wine grape variety is considered as a permitted grape variety in the sparkling wines Doc of Prosecco that is located in the north of the city of Treviso along the famous Piave River of the region.

This grape variety is referred to a light-skinned variety of grape that is mainly used as a minor blending variety along with a number of other grape varieties, especially Glera grape variety, mostly for the preparation as well as the production of the sparkling wines of Prosecco in Conegliano-Valdobbiadene in Prosecco.

This grape as a blend helps to add aroma, acidity as well as complexity to the wines so prepared out of it.

This white wine grape variety is considered to be a productive variety of grape and the vines of this grape perform their best in the sunny as well as dry environments.

Thus, this is the main reason why the vines are grown and taken care in the regions of Conegliano – Valdobbiadene.

In such ideal conditions, the vines of this white wine grape variety sustain a very good level of acidity and this further makes these grape an ideal choice for the production of the light as well as sparkling wines.

Apart from being used as a blending partner, this white wine grape variety is also concerned with the production of the sweet Passito wine called Torchiato di Fregona.

When prepared into DOCs, this grape must make up to 30 percent of the total blend so produced.

The resulting wines produced out of this white wine grape variety, especially when blended with Boschera and Glera are golden as to their appearance and they contain flavors similar to honey and apricots.

This white wine grape variety is considered as a very important variety that makes a pivotal part of the winemaking tradition of Veneto, and has been prevailing there since the beginning of the 19th century.

Thus, this also states that this white wine grape variety has a very long history. Another important thing about this grape variety is that it only finds its origin and existence in the regions of northern Italy.

Thus, you will never encounter of the vines of this white wine grape variety in any other regions outside the northeastern corners of Italy.

This white wine grape variety is known under a number of synonyms such as Verdia Bianca di Conegliano, Verdiger, Verdiso Gentile, Verdise Bianca, Groppeta, Perduti, Peverenda, Verdia de Campagna, Verdisot, VerdissaGrossa and many others.

Origin

This white wine grape variety is said to have originated in the regions of north-eastern Italy. Also, the plantation and cultivation of this white wine grape variety are restricted till the regions of Italy only and therefore it is usually not seen in the other regions of the world.

Characteristics

The wines produced out of this white wine grape variety are mostly considered as very acidic in nature.

In fact, the acidity happens to be a trademark of the wines produced out of this white wine grape variety.

Apart from a good level of acidity, the wines produced out of this grape variety are also said to have a distinctive feature of mineralty into them.

The wines produced out of this white wine grape variety come along with a little hint of bitterness in them.

However, the level of bitterness clearly depends upon the style that this wine has been prepared in.

Some of the wines produced out of this white wine grape variety exhibit the flavors similar to apple, citrus, green pepper along with the fragrance of wisteria.

The wines named Spumante and Frizzante that are produced out of this white wine grape variety are considered to be very yeasty having the notes of fresh bread in them along with the flavors of apples and citrus.

Other wines produced out of this white wine grape variety are considered to have flavors similar to honey as well as dried apricots.

Food pairing

All the wines produced out of this white wine grape variety are best paired with the food items such as spinach and feta filo parcels, garlic bread as well as smoked vegetables cured in lemon.
