Vinhao grapes

Vinhao, also known as Sousao, is considered as a dark skinned variety of red wine grape that hails from the origin of the Iberian Peninsula.


This red wine grape variety is used as to the preparation and production of the intensely colored, but light red wines of the region.

This red wine grape variety entertains a very strong pigmentation of color, and that is why the color of the wines so produced out of it is very intense and deep.

This grape variety is mostly referred to be a teinturier grape. Though the color of the berries of the grape of this red wine grape variety is deep red in color, interestingly the flesh of this grape variety is not very pigmented.

The wines so produced out of this red wine grape variety entertain a violet-red colored of the wines and therefore they appear very appealing in the glass.

This grape variety is from the specie of Vitisvinifera species of grape and its scientific name is Vitisvinifera Souzao.

The higher classification of this red wine grape variety straightaway falls under the category of the common grape vine.

This red wine grape variety is basically considered as a Portuguese variety of red wine grape which is basically concerned with the production of the famous Port wines of the region.

The wines so produced out of this grape variety are mainly noted for its deep color and appearance.

Today, the plantation and cultivation of this red wine grape variety have extended to other regions as well and thus the vines of this red wine grape variety experience a good level of plantation and cultivation in the regions of South Africa, California as well as Australia.

Not only this, the grape variety is also referred to as an authorized planting in the Douro region as well as the areas of Dao-Lafoes.

This red wine grape variety is addressed under a number of synonyms such as Souson, Sousao, tinto Nacional, Negrao, Tinto Antigo, NegraoPe de Perdiz, EspadeiroBasto, Espadeiro da Tinta, Tinto da Parada as well as Pinta Femea.
