Geography and Climate are giving the Necessary Support

For the wine grape cultivation to be effective, the geography and climate are very important, and I would say that the Lombardy region is gifted in these aspects.

The history of wine grape cultivation in Lombardy can be dated back to centuries ago.

This is true especially in the regions surrounding the shores of the ‘Lake Garda’. Here, the climate is moderated by the lakes.

Besides these regions, we can find some notable vineyards in the Po Basin.

The placement of Lombardy between the Alps mountain ranges and the Po Basin is found to be responsible for the variety of mesoclimates here.

In addition, the alpine continental macroclimate makes the variations in diurnal temperature to be higher.

These climatic conditions in addition to the topography are making this region more suited for wine grape cultivation.

Also, this region is offering a wide variety of wine styles.

Sparkling Wines from Franciacorta and Oltrepò Pavese

Although Lombardy is having numerous wines in DOCG, DOC, and IGT statuses, the sparkling wines from the regions of Franciacorta and Oltrepò Pavese are particularly famous.

Let’s see them here:

Franciacorta

This region, which is located along the shores of the ‘Lake Iseo’, is producing some of the most prestigious sparkling wines in the whole country.

Here, we can see the vineyards having planted in well-morainic soils.

Mostly, the sparkling wines from this region will have Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco as the primary grape varieties. In addition to these grape varieties, Pinot Nero can be used up to 15%.

Most often, the sparkling wines from this region will have a little sweet taste.

Oltrepò Pavese

This region is accounting for more than half of the total wine production of Lombardy region.

The region, which is located along the Po valley, was part of the Piemonte (Piedmont) in the past. Now, it is producing the popular DOCG sparkling wine by using ‘Pinot Nero’ as the primary grape variety.

This region is famous for its sparkling rosé wines too.

In this region, the sparkling wines are being produced in a variety of styles.

They are

Metodo classic

The wines that are labeled this way will be produced using method ‘méthode champenoise’ of Champagne region.

As mentioned earlier, the primary grape variety in these wines is Pinot Nero. But, a blend of the following grape varieties can be used up to 30%:

  • Chardonnay
  • Pinot Bianco
  • Pinot Grigio

Frizzante

These are the slightly sparkling wines and include Buttafuoco and Sangue di Giuda style wines that are made from Croatina grape variety.

These wines will have Moscato grapes too.

Other Grape Varieties in Lombardy Wines

Apart from the aforementioned grape varieties, ‘Chiavennasca’ is being used in the DOCG wines from the Valtellina region of Lombardy.

This grape variety is the Lombardian version of the famous ‘Nebbiolo’.

Other major grape varieties used in Lombardy wines are:

  • Rondinella
  • Trebbiano
