Introducing Wines from Murcia, Spain

Murcia, which is one of the less popular regions in Spain, is located in the southeast corner of the country.

With Andalucia, Castilla-La-Mancha, Valencia, and the Mediterranean Sea on its four sides, Murchia is the housing of the three world-famous DO appellations, which are namely Bullas, Jumilla, and Yecla.

The history of wine production in the Murcia region of Spain can be dated back to the ancient times when the Phoenicians introduced it in this region.

But, Murcia started gaining the reputation in winemaking only during the nineteenth century, when French wine producers settled in the region.

These migrants from France found that the climatic conditions of Murcia more or less like similar to that of Mourvèdre-growing areas in France and hence, they planted Monastrell grape here.

Now we focus on the Jumilla wine in Spain with some basic information about wines from Bullas and Yecla regions:

Wine from Jumilla, Murcia

Jumilla DO is extending over the northern parts of Murcia, which includes the Jumilla municipality. At present, Jumilla has more than 32,000 hectares of vineyards with almost 3,000 registered grape-growers.

With several numbers of wine shops, Jumilla is continuing to be the primary winemaking region of Murcia.

The wines that are being produced in Jumilla were known to be robust with higher contents of alcohol until ten years ago.

With due course of time, the winemakers of this region were able to come up with better quality of wines.

Grapes in Jumilla wines

The red grape varieties that are authorized for use in Jumilla wines are:

  • Monastrell
  • Tempranillo
  • Garnacha Tintorera
  • Garnacha
  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Merlot
  • Syrah
  • Petit Verdot

The white grape varieties that are authorized for use in Jumilla wines are:

  • Airén
  • Macabeo
  • Chardonnay
  • Sauvignon blanc
  • Moscatel
  • Pedro Ximénez
  • Malvasía

Of all the above-mentioned grape varieties, we can find Monastrell as the most significant one representing more than 85% of the grapes planted.

Monastrell is also the third most widely planted vines in the whole country, which can be mostly seen along the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea.

The major reason for this wide distribution is the drought resistant characteristic of this grape variety.

Jumilla Wine Characteristics

The best wines from Jumilla regions of Murcia show a mixed flavor profile, which includes fruitiness, earthy flavors, and mineral notes.

This distinctive flavor of Jumilla wines is developed when younger, complex aromas of matured grapes combine with coffee and oak spices during the barrel aging. Jumilla is also famous for its rose wines produced from Monastrell.

Wine from Bullas, Murcia

Bullas DO forms the northwestern part of Murcia and is known for its oldest vineyards of Spain. The history of wine production in Bullas can be dated back to 800 BC.

Today, the local winemakers in Bullas have been successful in blending the traditional wine producing methods along with the modern techniques to come up with wines of supreme quality.

In Bullas again, there are many types of grapes. However, like Jumilla, the most prominent variety that is being used in winemaking is the Monastrell.

In most of the wines, this will be used in combination with other types like Tempranillo, Macabeo, Airén, and so on.

Wine from Yecla, Murcia

Yecla DO forms the northernmost part of Murcia and is very popular for its wines since the ancient times. This region of Murcia is notable for its wider usage of Monastrell in winemaking.

Until a decade ago, this region was synonymous with the robust wine, which was due to the arid climate, and old-fashioned winemaking techniques.

However, today’s wine producers of Yecla are able to produce a better quality wine at reasonable prices. The authorized grape varieties in Yecla are almost similar to Jumilla and Bullas regions.
