In 1982, Florentino Arzuaga, the founder of the cellar also purchased the estate, La Planta where visitors can not only explore the flora and fauna but can relax and enjoy the wines from the cellar whilst taking a break in the cosy hotel and spa.

Depending on the season a visitor is able to walk through the vineyards and spend the day with the harvesters as you learn the pruning methods and get the aromas before wine touches your lips.

The building is rustic and solid stone, like a castle with the arches and tower that can be seen from afar, the inside is warm and woody and we have not even begun to discuss the wines yet!

The Arzuaga Navarro family founded the cellar in the 1990’s after he purchased the reserve where he envisioned a place for lovers of wine, escaping into another world. First came the estate and then the vines began to grow into a magnificent splendour of tranquillity alongside everyone’s favourite, wine.

An Object of Knowledge – Wine

Spanish wine would not be Spanish if the vineyards did not use the infamous Temparanillo grape to make the traditional taste that the consumers are accustomed too.

At Bodegas Azuarga Navarro, there is a variety of wines to be selected and the most popular choices for the palates of most is Tino Fino or what we know as Tempranillo. It has medium bodied wine, intense violet in colour and it has berry aromas with black forest fruit. The Tempranillo is strong tannin to sweet over maturation.

Cabernet Sauvignon is one that everyone around the world is familiar with and each country tasting unique to their origin, here it has a green pepper and black fruit aroma.

Merlot is a favourite for many wine lovers as they sip wine and eat cheese but with the Azuarga Merlot you can get the taste of nut nuances and black fruits. It is a medium but hard set wine with strong tannin.

Chardonnay also popular to a selected group as many prefer white wine to red but not all Chardonnay tastes the same and in Spain you will find a uniquely different feel as the Vitis Vinifera or white grape originally produced in the Burgundy region of France comes to life producing a smooth and aromatic must. The honey hued grape is well rounded and the final product is kept in oak casks to allow for a distinguished taste.

Pinot Noir also uses the Mediterranean grape, Vitis Vinifera and is regarded as one of the most international and elegant varieties. The name of the grape derives from the French as we know the grape comes from there and the vines are used throughout the world, well where there is a climate to sustain it. They grow in cold regions and produce low- tannin, medium bodied wine. The Pinot Noir is a fresh and fruity light wine that leaves a lively and fresh taste to linger on your tongue.

Pago Florentino is not chemically stabilised and the vines grow at the foot of the hill where the soil has pebbles on the surface which is good for drainage, the fermentation process is about twelve months long and the wine goes into an oak cask.

Other wines at the Navarro estate include; Fan D Oro a white wine in red wine territory, a sparkling wine with a twist in the name – Txapana Arzuaga, Txapana Arzuaga Rose, Vintage selections and many more.

Wine making process

The wine making process at Bodegas Arzuaga Navarro is not an easy one as the grapes are hand – picked and harvested in early October.

Each vineyard is harvested separately so that the selection is of the high standards that are required. 15 kilogram crates are packed and transported to the cellar where the wine process begins.
