Now, let’s see what the region has got for the wine lovers here…

Wines of Palermo

I would say Palermo is the perfect place for tasting a wide range of Sicilian wines.

Here, you can taste both the sweeter Marsala wines when at the same time being able to try the great wines made from Malvasia. Of all the malvasias, the best-noted ones are Pantelleria and Lipari.

Now, the Sicilian state has started gaining popularity for its dry white wines too! The state is found to be loaded with DOC wines from which we can understand that the whole state is rich in its wine production and quality.

Not only DOC wines, we can also find some innovative wineries in Palermo, Sicily. These wineries are experimenting with grape varieties like Inzolia, Grecanico, and Chardonnay.

However, it has been predicted that the future of the Sicilian wine industry will greatly rely on the red wines. The grape variety ‘Nero d’Avola’ which is being used for the production of both blended wines and varietal wines has gained a lot of attention in the recent times. This is a Syrah-like grape variety.

Now, let’s have a look at the must-visit vineyards in Palermo and Sicily

Cantine Barbera

Here, you can see the vineyards being planted so close to the sea where the vines are enjoying warm, dry summers and mild winters with an amazing temperature difference between days and nights.

From the vineyards of Cantine Barbera, what we get are the ripe berries that are rich in taste and sweetness.

The first plants of these vineyards are of the Inzolia grape variety.

At present, we can find all the following grape varieties (including international varieties) in the Cantine Barber vineyards:

  • Chardonnay
  • Merlot
  • Petit Verdot
  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Perricone
  • Nerello
  • Alicante
  • Nero d’Avola

Today, the wines of Cantine Barbera are found to be distributed in almost fourteen countries around the globe with the best markets as the U.S., Germany, China, Japan, and so on. In Italy, we can get these wines in all the major cities.

Planeta

This is one of the leading wine estates in Sicily, which has vineyards and wine estates all over the state. This, which was founded in the 1990s, will be a good treat to the wine lovers and travellers with its widely distributed vineyards.

The popularity of the Planeta wineries is mainly due to the innovations they made in matching the soil types to the grape varieties may it be the local Sicilian varieties or the international ones.

The very first vineyards of Planeta were planted with Chardonnay at Ulmo. Even today, the company’s major crop is found to be this variety with the planting density of 3,800 to 4,500 wine plants per hectare.

The other grape varieties that are being grown in the Planeta vineyards are:

  • Grecanico
  • Merlot
  • Viognier
  • Nero d’Avola

  • Petit Verdot
  • Cabernet Franc
