Veneto Wine Region
Veneto, the Land of Wines
Veneto, which can be called as the sexiest region in Italy is the Land of Wines too!
Veneto in the northeastern corner of the country is one among the group of highly productive wine regions. It’s also the largest DOC producer.
Why are Veneto Wines so special?
We could say that the topography makes the wines from Veneto so special.
This region is well-protected from the harsh climatic conditions by the Alps and the colder climate is more suitable to the white grape varieties.
On the other hand, the warmer coastal plains, valleys and lakes have turned to be an important place for the popular red grape varieties.
This unique topography, as well as the climatic conditions, could be the main reason for Veneto’s 28 DOCs and 14 DOCGs.
List of Specialty Wines from Veneto
Veneto wines are few among the world’s best exports. Here is the list of such wines from this region:
Soave
This is the most popular white wine of Veneto. Although Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave forms the major part of this white wine, this also contains a wider range of other grape varieties like:
- Chardonnay
- Pinot Bianco
- Trebbiano Toscano
Soave continues to be popular among white wine lovers for its fresh and crisp taste. This white wine also has got the potential to repair your food. Now, you can find two new enhancements in Soave which are:
Soave Superiore: This has got DOCG appellation and is a slightly stronger type which is the result of ageing.
Soave Classico: Within the regular DOC, this represents the grapes that come from the best vineyards alone.
Recioto di Soave: This is the exceptionally sweet wine which has gained DOCG status.
In addition to the above-mentioned ones, there are also some sparkling varieties in Soave.
Valpolicella
This easy-drinking wine is the blend of the following red grape varieties:
- Corvina
- Rondinella
- Molinara
The popular types of Valpolicella are:
Amarone della Valpolicella: This wine, which is often described as the most interesting wine in Italy is the product of the above-mentioned grape varieties. This darker and deeper wine has got the DOCG status more recently. This structured and complex wine is due to partly dried grapes.
Recioto della Valpolicella: This is among the country’s finest wines with the sweet taste. The method used for preparing this wine is called ‘ripasso’ which involves the refermentation with the grape remains.
Bardolino
This Veneto wine is also made from the three grape varieties used in the preparation of Valpolicella.
Bardolino is popular for its amazing cherry fragrance. This is again an easy-drinking type with many versions. The most popular version is Bardolino Superiore, which has gained the promotion to DOCG status. There is a pink Chiaretto version which is again very popular.
Bianco di Custoza
This is another white wine from Veneto made using the following grape varieties:
- Garganega
- Trebbiano Toscana
- Friuliano
This has gained the DOC status and is very popular in the local regions. I would say that this white wine deserves more popularity from around the globe.
Lessini
This DOC white wine is produced between Verona and Vicenza and contains dry grapes. A major part of Lessini is Durello grape variety.
These wines are most often seen as sparkling types but are seldom seen outside Italy.
Prosecco
Prosecco, the most popular sparkling wine in Veneto is made from Glera grape variety. The method employed in the production of prosecco is Charmat in which the refermentation is done in larger tanks. In the year 2009, this wine has got the DOCG promotion.
