Vermentino Nero is referred to a very famous variety of red wine grape that is said to be hailing from Italy.

To be more particular, this red wine grape variety is widely grown and planted in the regions of the province of Massa-Carrara in Tuscany, Italy.

Post the scenario of the World War II, the vines of this red wine grape variety went on a brink of extinction.

Thankfully, it was Podere Scurtarola, a wine producer from the region of Massa who helped in reviving the vines of this red wine grape variety.

He started to replant all the old vineyards with the grapes of this red wine grape variety.

Thus, after this step, the scenario for this red wine grape variety became positive and by the year 2000, around 199 hectares of the red wine grape varieties were planted in the regions all throughout Italy.

Thereafter, this red wine grape variety was also authorized as to the production in the Denominazione di Origine Controllata wines of Colline Lucchesi as well as Candia dei Colli Apuani respectively.

This red wine grape variety was considered to be a dark-berried color mutation of another grape variety called Vermentino.

However, some of the ampelographers in this context claimed that this grape variety may have its origins from Spain and therefore it could be related to another grape variety called Monastrell and not Vermentino.

It was also claimed that this red wine grape variety might have any connection with the Aragonese variety of grape.

Finally, in the year 2012, all the DNA reports, neither confirmed nor denied the above stated theories.

This variety of red wine grape is considered to prepare some of the most tasteful red wines of the world that tend to impress all the wine lovers like the back of their hands.

This red wine grape variety is known and addressed under a number of names and the major synonyms of this grape are Rollo, Rolle as well as Pigato.

Origin

The proper origins of this red wine grape variety are still not known to the world. Some of the ampelograhpers entertain a belief that this red wine grape variety is nothing, but a color mutation of the famous and widely planted white wine grape variety called Vermentino and therefore it directs that this red wine grape variety could be a native to the region of Massa-Carrara of Italy.

On the other hand, the contention of some of the other ampelographers is entirely different.

They claim that this red wine grape variety may have Spanish origins and could be closely related to the grape varieties of Parraleta as well as Monastrell.

However, the DNA profiling so produced has failed to carry out any support or doubt on the above stated theories and therefore the origins of this red wine grape variety are very much uncertain in nature.
