Terrantez is referred to as a famous white wine grape variety that majorly hails from the region of Portugal.

The use of this white wine grape variety was once extensively carried out on the island of Madeira where it was taken into use to prepare the sweet and fortified wines that also made this island very famous.

Unfortunately, the plantation as well as cultivation of this white wine grape variety has become extinct today.

Even if this white wine grape variety is considered to have become extinct, there are still some limited plantings in the province of Minho where the plantation as well as cultivation of this white wine grape variety is taken very seriously.

This grape variety is mostly used as a blending grape in the Alvarinho as well as other grapes in the preparation of DOC wine in that particular area.

Apart from this, this white wine grape variety is also considered as a permitted variety of grape in a number of IPR regions of the Azores that include Terceira Island, Biscoitos IPR, Graciosa IPR, Pico IPR as well as Pico Island.

It was believed that this white wine grape variety was taken to the volcanic archipelago from the regions and the mainland of Portugal by the early explorers.

Talking about the plantings of this white wine grape variety, some of the plantings of this grape variety could be encountered in the region of Azores which is an island chain of Portugal located towards the northwest of Madeira in the Northern Atlantic Ocean.

Some other regions that entertain the plantings of this white wine grape variety include the provinces located on the mainland of Portugal; one of them is the Minho province.

This white wine grape variety is known under a number of synonyms such as Murrao, Morrao, Pe de Perdrix, Pe de Perdiz, Pie de Perdix as well as Terrantes.

Origin

The origin of this white wine grape variety is ancient. In the year 1795, the wines of this white wine grape variety, especially the long-lived Madeira Terrantez was very much famous among the people.

In fact, this wine has survived into the 21st century as well. It is said to have originated in the region of Portugal.

Unfortunately, today the plantation as well as cultivation of this white wine grape variety has become totally extinct in the nature and only a few grape varieties could be found throughout the world.

Characteristics

Food pairing

All the wines produced out of this white wine grape variety are best paired with the food items such as manchego cheese, roasted veggies with dark chocolate just as well as toasted flatbreads with olive oil and aromatic dukkah.
