Quality Focused Wines from Missouri
Missouri, which is a state located in the mid-western part of the U.S, is associated with quality-focused wines right from the nineteenth century.
The wine industry in the state is found to be growing rapidly with almost 6.5 square kilometres of land under vine cultivation.
Not recently, but the wine industry within the state has been showing a consistent growth for more than a decade now. Currently, the industry is contributing to more than $1.76 billion to the state.
The Missouri Wine and Grape Board is providing a great support to the state’s wine industry via promotions and research efforts. Now, let’s see more about the viticulture and viniculture in Missouri here…
Journey of Missouri’s Wine Industry
As I mentioned earlier, wine has been associated with Missouri for a longer duration now.
It was the German immigrants who founded the state’s wine industry in the earlier part of the nineteenth century.
This is why the wine corridor of Missouri is being referred to as the Missouri Rhineland. The wine journey of Missouri did not stop with just Germans. A few years later, immigrants from Italy also started the wine production here.
The history of U.S. wines reveals that during the mid-1880s, Missouri had produced more wine than any other state in volume. Also, Missouri was standing second as the largest producer of wine before Prohibition.
Not only these, this state has the pride of having the first American Viticultural area recognition in the country. The Augusta AVA of Missouri was the first to be denoted as AVA in the year 1980. Now, the number AVAs of Missouri has increased to five.
Geography and Location of Missouri Rhineland
The geographical area of Missouri Rhineland is found to be running from the west of St. Louis to the east of Jefferson City.
We can observe that most of this Rhineland is located in the valley of the Missouri River.
Why it’s been called as Rhineland is mainly because of its similarities to the Rhineland of Europe. This area is more suitable for vine cultivation with its soils being mostly rocky.
Yes, these soils are able to support other crops too. But, the steeper slopes are much utilized for vine cultivation here. As of now, the state has more than 126 wineries producing some excellent wines.
It’s true, that Prohibition affected the wine industry in Missouri as well. But, the state has slowly recovered from the damage and has already started to rebuild the wine industry.
Alongside concentrating on traditional varieties, the state is also experimenting with several new grape varieties now. Currently, the state is contributing almost 971,031 gallons of wine every year from around 400 vineyards.
We can expect the state to be turned into an important wine producer in the near future. The largest AVA of the state is the Ozark Mountain AVA and within this, there are three smaller AVAs including the Augusta AVA.
The other two AVAs that are located within this larger AVA are Hermann AVA and Ozark Highlands AVA.

Apart from these Native American varieties and French-American hybrid varieties, we can also find some Vitis vinifera varieties here. They include:
