Cádiz, which is said to be the most ancient city of the Atlantic Coast, is boasting the Vino de la Tierra (VT) title for the production of wines.

This region, which was founded by the Phoenicians in the 1100 BC, is more famous for its VT wine varietals.

Cádiz – Region Introduction and Winemaking History

The Cádiz wine appellation is found to be covering the areas of the northern and eastern sides of the Cádiz port city.

To understand better, this covers the area that is just near to the very famous Sherry country.

In the historical times, this was operated as the port of departure for the great Christopher Columbus on a couple of his voyages.

Today, this is found to be one of the most southerly appellations in Spain and is one of the most famous appellations in the Andalucía wine region using the Vino de la Tierra title.

The Spanish history suggests that Cádiz is the oldest, as well as the continuously inhabited region in Spain and hence, it has a huge winemaking history.

The history of winemaking in Cádiz can be dated back to as long as the eighth century BC. Since then, the region is consistently traveling with a colourful wine history.

It was during the year 2005 that the region was awarded the Vino de la Tierra status. Currently, the Cádiz region is working towards getting promoted to DO status.

Description of Vino de la Tierra

The term literally means wine of the land and is typically focusing on the origins of the wine. This is the category of wines which concentrates more on origin rather than the quality and styles.

We could say that this is the most flexible category, which can be produced as varietals or blends using a wide variety of grapes.

However, the appellation laws have imposed some restrictions for the vineyard yields. There are 46 VT titles in Spain of which Cádiz is more important.

Sub-Regions of Cádiz

The Cádiz appellation can be sub-divided into two distinct areas. Of these, the larger zone is found to be edging the Atlantic Ocean and is greatly influenced by it.

On the other hand, the smaller zone is less impacted by the Atlantic Ocean.

In general, the climate in this region is found to be Mediterranean in nature with warmer or milder temperatures all through the year. The soils are found to be a blend of sand (arenas) or clay (albariza).

The calcium contents and marine fossils that are present in the soils are found to be reflecting the sunlight back to the vine plants, thereby, aiding the ripening of wine grapes. Overall, the terrain of Cádiz is found to be characterized by rolling hills.

As I mentioned earlier, a wide variety of grapes is employed for producing reds, whites, and rosés here.

The reds and whites are either young or aged.
