Lambrusco Grapes

Lambrusco is a red wine grape from which an Italian red wine is prepared. It is a bright coloured grape and is one of the most loved red wines.

Lambrusco is a common grape in most of the wine regions in Italy.

There are more than 60 Lambrusco varieties of grapes, but the most common Lambrusco varieties are Lambrusco Maestri, Lambrusco Grasparossa, Lambrusco Marani, Lambrusco Montericco, Lambrusco Sorbara and Lambrusco Salamino.

These grapes and wine are cultivated from 4 areas in Emilia- Romagna and 1 in Lombardy.

The colour of Lambrusco grape is responsible for the beautiful hue of the Lambrusco wine. It produces a fabulous wine.

Origin of Lambrusco

The earliest evidence of Lambrusco wines date back thousands of years. It is believed to be cultivated by the Etruscans.

The love for Lambrusco dates back to the Roman times. It has been one of the most valued wines since the Roman times.

The Lambrusco grape was largely produced in the northern Europe and the United States of America during the 1980s.

The Lambrusco wines were the most favourite of all other wines. Their demand was so high that the makers had to introduce new methods to produce the bulk of Lambrusco wines in order to fulfil the rising demand.

In the early 21st century, the Lambrusco wine was one of the highest profile wines. The name and fondness for Lambrusco wines are still the same, but the fermentation procedure has changed during the course of time.

Earlier the Lambrusco wines were bottle- fermented, but today, they are subjected to secondary fermentation in big steel tanks.

This method is called as Charmat or tank method. This method is most widely used in Italy.

Lambrusco Wine Regions

There are many Lambrusco wine regions in Italy. Apart from Italy, the Lambrusco is cultivated in Australia and Argentina.

Lambrusco Mantovano: It is a wine region in the Lombardy region. They produce dry and semi- dry wines.

Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro: It is situated in south of Modena. It is the smallest Lambrusco wine producing region.

This region fabricates the most tannic wine. The dry and full- bodied wine produced by them is amazing. The wine produced here is deep purplish to red in colour.

Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce: This wine region is situated 11 kms (7 miles) west to the Sorbara village and produces about 90 percent if Salamilo.

They produce absolutely amazing wines that are light bodied and light coloured with frizz.

They produce dry as well as dry wines.

Lambrusco Reggiano: Lambrusco Reggiano is the largest Lambrusca producing region.

They produce dry and full bodied wines that are darker in hue, while sweet wines are also produced that are light bodied and sparkling.

Lambrusco di Sorbara: This wine region is situated near Sorbara village, at the north of Modena.

This wine region is applauded for producing the highest quality and fragrant wines. The wines they produce are full bodied, acidic and dark hued.

The colour of the wine varies from purplish hue to deep ruby.

Character of the Lambrusco Wines

The Lambrusco wines are sweet, frizzanate (sparkling), and dark hued red wines.The wines are dry and full- bodied.

These wines are very aromatic. The strawberry notes paired with a little bitter finish are the highlight of this wine.

The character of the wine differs slightly according to the different grapes. The colour and texture depend on the region from where the wine is produced.
