The business is run by a 7th generation family who own an extensive wine making plant with state of the art technology, 17 wine cellars that are distributed over the best areas occupying a total of 75 000 square metres and a capacity to hold 35 million litres.
They have two vineyards; Santa Lucia and Gilbalbin are spread over two estates located in the famous Sherry Triangle with gentle undulating hills and the “Jerez Superior” best soils in the area with 500 hectares.
The history
In 1821 Don Benigno and Manuel Lopez Barbadillo settled in Sanlucar de Barrameda, a city in the northwest of Cadiz province a part of the community of Andalucia in southern Spain.
Benigno was born in Burgos, Spain and moved to Mexico for twenty years before establishing the business.
He bought Bodegas El Toro in 1824 and from there grew into exporting to U.K and U.S.
In 1827 the family launched their first Manzanilla called Divina Pastora and became famous after that as they sold the sherry in a bottle which was a new development as it was usually sold in barrels to bars and by 1954 the Bodegas Barbadillo Company was fully established.
Today they produce Brandy, Sherry and wine on an international level with many companies in their portfolio and are known for their products Solear and Muyfina.

The Vineyards
They have two vineyards; Santa Lucia and Gilbalbin are spread over two estates located in the famous Sherry Triangle with gentle undulating hills and the “Jerez Superior” best soils in the area with 500 hectares.
The business is still family owned today with seventeen Bodegas in prime positions and reserves of 45 000 butts that allows the Barbadillo family to provide world markets with the highest quality Sherry and Manzanilla distributed in over 50 countries around the world.
For those of us who are unsure of what Manzanilla is it is a variety of Sherry made in the region of Sanlucar de Barrameda and in Spain camomile tea is called Manzanilla which is how the wine got its name as it resembles the taste of the tea.

In 1891, Manuel’s father gave him a christening gift which was a bottle of Sherry and in those days he had already described it as an old Amontillado.
Manuel was a poet and in homage to him the 19th century bottle is presented in a crystal glass decanter shaped as an inkwell.
The bottle is finished with a platinum paint and is encased in a leather pouch.
There are only 100 bottles of Versos 1891 and the family have been the custodians of this American cask aged and nutty Sherry that was released on Miguel’s 125th anniversary.
Barbadillo Manzanilla Solear is a light Sherry with a bright and tangy finish, dry and nutty

Wine Writer
Michael is an online enthusiast, with a lot of knowledge about online marketing. Traveling around the world to hunt for the perfect wine. Latest on Sicily, where Etna has a huge impact on the taste, which is strong with a bitter aftertaste for the youngest wines, but older wines are fantastic. Drinking wine, and writing about them, are one the passions. Remember to drink responsibly 🙂
